BAS-RELIEF SCULPTURES
Intro to Bas-Relief Sculptures
In 2021, the impulse to move images off of the canvas appeared. I had no idea how this would happen. Over the many years, I’d occasionally experimented with building up areas of the canvas or paper with various substances and textiles. I loved the new textures that this brought about. In 2023, another artist, Harvey Rayner, commissioned three paintings in which he asked me to respond to a sculpture he’d acquired from another artist. The lines of the sculpture were strong and clear and I wanted to respond in kind. The idea of ‘drawing’ with a thick rope occurred. As I lay the rope on the canvas and watched it coil off of the surface, I finally saw how the paintings could begin to rise off. I began to build structures onto the canvas using rope, canvas, and burlap. As the work was formed, I continued to respond with paint adding color, line and shapes. The images grew into rich three dimensional forms and I’ve now stepped into the rich and inexhaustible world of sculpture.
